It’s a predictable structure that builds itself from painful experiences, stored memories, and the stories your mind creates to make sense of it all. “Why did it happen? What did I do wrong? How can I prevent this again?”
Fear is supposed to be an alarm for our protection.
But it becomes an overreactive response that traps us.
These stories seem to solidify into beliefs, which then shape an identity. From there, your mind constructs what we call a “Protective Strategy.”
This strategy is your mind’s best attempt to keep you safe. It drives behaviors and habits designed to manage external circumstances. Perhaps you became a people-pleaser to avoid rejection, a perfectionist to prevent humiliation, or relentlessly driven to overcome past shame.
You might accomplish incredible things because of these strategies. Yet, here’s the crucial truth: even after achieving all of this, you still feel fear.
AND, due to false alarms, you often feel those fears when there is no danger.
Why External Solutions Fail to Dissolve Internal Fear
The problem is, your Protective Strategy is a false solution. It manages the outside world, but it doesn’t dissolve the root cause of your fear – the internal belief and alarm system.
Think about it:
- The billionaire buys a bunker, still fearing collapse.
- The high achiever lies awake, worrying about failure.
- The fitness expert constantly scrutinizes their body, driven by fear, not passion.
Fear doesn’t stop just because the external threat is “handled.” The mind, without a true sense of internal safety, will always invent a new threat: “Will I lose it all? Can I trust anyone? What if this isn’t enough?”
Until you address the internal, fear-based belief system and stories, no amount of external success or control will bring you peace.

About the Letting Go of Fear Process
Six sessions, each about 90 minutes long, with me guiding people through a variety of common fears.
We work through obstacles and resistance as they arise, and you can apply the process to your own thoughts and feelings to achieve the same results.
You can listen to the audio or watch the video and work through your fears along with the class. Pause any time you need to move a bit slower or you want to deepen the process.
In the six sessions, I give multiple approaches to use, and show you different ways to apply a system of separating from your fears, moving the energy of emotions, and how to work through the stories and resistance that shows up.

Gary van Warmerdam combines the wisdom spiritual traditions have in eliminating suffering with common sense in a way that is both practical and effective. Gary has studied extensively with best selling author of The Four Agreements, Dr. Miguel Ruiz beginning 1994. He co-developed and taught the Four Agreements Facilitators training at the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck NY and the Crossings in Austin Texas. His teachings are based in universal principles of common sense and unconditional love found in all spiritual traditions. Gary leads several intensive events during the year and coaches individual clients. His book, MindWorks, is available in print and in digital formats in numerous places.
Gary has previous professional experience in sales and management in both small and large businesses. He served as a nuclear trained officer in the US Navy and as officer of the deck of an aircraft carrier. He has a degree in Mechanical Engineering.

This series is designed for you to see and experience results with each session.
Will all your anxiety and fear be gone after practicing these six sessions? I dont’ know. It is possible. You may have to do a session for each fear you have, so it may take multiple sessions. I suspect that you have more than six fears.
No matter what, this approach will give you powerful tools and skills to dissolve your fears and identify the beliefs behind them, opening the door to further change.
Some of this is a function of your skill level in being present, your ability to focus your attention, and the amount of false beliefs and trauma you have left to resolve.
